Can We Learn From Finland’s Education?

Since the 1970s, Finland has taken a serious approach to educate students, and today, that country still enjoys top ratings. What Finland did was to have highly competent teachers, foster early childhood education, allow schools the autonomy to address local needs by decentralizing administration, and guaranteed a uniform and free education for all students. What has been found is Finnish students score higher than most of their peers on international assessment tests, although they do not have much homework and tests. In addition to the core curriculum, much emphasis is places on music, the arts, and outdoor activities.

This is information that may be of interest to us ad we discuss our educational priorities going forward.

I am interested in your thoughts.

How to Breakthrough to a Life of Wealth Creation and Freedom

Just Another Day?

Today is Sunday. It is calmer than yesterday but activities go on as well they should. What difference is made by naming a 24 hour period from another. In the universe everything goes on as naturally as ordered by the divine creator. The sun sits in its place and the planets, those that we know and those that we do not know continue to go around the sun in the fashion and order or disorder that nature prescribes. Here on earth, more precisely, in North America, we grapple with what is described as senseless carnage to often occurring in our schools, cutting short and wasting the potentials of many children.

Then there is the siren song of “our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families” a sentiment that has begun to ring very hollow; very empty — like the barrel that general Kelly talked about.

The sad default of mental illness to describe planned and determined destruction of innocent lives in places that are deemed to be safe. We begin to realize that no place is safe and no number of armed individuals have so far hindered the carnage that marks the places where children of different ages and cultures and hues meet to prepare themselves for a chaotic world.

It’s puzzling that weapons of mass destruction are easily obtained in places that boast of safety; places that are thought to be the best and most humane. Yet, no other place on earth has had this kind of destruction.

When will we awake to the senselessness of those with the authority to bring about change but who continually refuse to do so. Instead, they set the state for more of the same– more of the same (here’s the word again) carnage. These men and women who are in seats of authority who permit this destruction will reap what they so callously sow. But, there is time to make a change. Will they make that change or will they go back to the proverbial hat to pull out the rabbit of “our thoughts and prayers are with the victims”. What would they say, if they were the victims? I wonder, what would they say?

Spend some time reading my best selling book. It may help.

Folks! We Know What to do.

Would you agree with me that it is futile looking around for something which you are holding in your hand? What we do to help one another and especially our children is not hidden from us. We already know what to do. It’s just a matter of putting the things into action and watch the change happen in the lives of our children.

It is not that we do not have time or “the time” as some often say. Each day is twenty-four hours — no more, no less and all of us operate within that frame. What is obvious is that we choose how time is utilized. Given that we must rest and recuperate, our waking hours must be used to bring about the desired results that we need.  We must decide how our time used on the various things that need to be done. It is better to get three things done well than to attempt to do a dozen things inadequately. So, here’s what we can do. Insist on  the “must dos” and devote the time that is needed to them. Do that without fail. For example, a must do is to spend time teaching your child or children the foundational things they need to make life work for them. Teach them to be prompt, focused, purposeful, habitual, and deliberate, to name a few. Notice that I said “teach” not “tell”. It is important that we understand the difference.

You will also agree with me that there are many times that we tell things to others and it does not make any difference what ever. That being the case, stop telling. It may be more effective to show rather than tell. There are very good reasons why we have eyes, so let’s get our kids looking at what we do. Mind you, I am not saying that we must never tell our children to do things, but we must be mindful of the effect of what we do. Also, children are very good at picking up what they see more than what they hear. Do you wonder why you’ve heard others, not you, making this famous observation about children — ” are you deaf”? Don’t laugh! We are just as guilty of ignoring what we hear. It’s true, that, “seeing is believing”. I’ll take that a little further and say that “seeing is convincing”. Unless is person is visually impaired, it’s hard to argue against what was shown.

Let’s use the wisdom we have acquired over time, the wisdom of the aged and live it out in the sight of our children. Do it in the morning, at noon, and in the evening. Do it daily, without fail and watch you children soar. While you are at it, sprinkle what you do with love. Love is a good season. It enhances so much.

Folks, we know what to do, so let’s do it.

A Time For Teaching

This month, Black History month, is a time for teaching. It’s a time set apart, as we know, to celebrate, to reflect, to honour, and to move into destiny. Every part of the story that was hidden, suppressed, or deliberately left out of the collection of books about the life and work of the first creation must be told to the descendants.

Whatever the original intention, the life and work of Black people cannot be destroyed; no, it cannot be forgotten. It cannot be forgotten, for much of life reflect the genius of this people. Much of life moved forward because of their discoveries and entrepreneurship.

It  is important to tell the descendants of the first people of their strategic place in life, for that is the key to their emancipation from the continued work of those who are bent on keeping them less than who they are. They need to know the greatness of their capacities and the innate ability to do the things that move creation forward.

Our boys must be reminded of how smart they are. They must be reminded of the accomplishments of those that have gone before them, those who are still here and they must be given opportunities to put forth their ideas into the areas of developing and constructing solution and cures for the bold challenges of our time. It will take the genius of our people to replicate and initiate solutions that the future demands.

Look at a child’s face as it lights up with the knowledge that he is smart, and great, and able! So, tell them just that, because the really are. Find the positive things that they need to hear and tell them daily; in the morning, the noontime and in the evening. Saturate their minds with the information that will awaken their genius and in the end, our world will be better for it. Take this time for teaching seriously and teach our children the greatness of their history, their present and their future.

It’s Never Too Late to Do What’s Right

never late

How often have we heard that it’s too late to take action on something that is important? It is at such times that we should press against the forces that suggest that we do nothing, and with all our might, push past those forces and do what needs to be done.

It is always easy to do nothing; to regard the present time as too late; to look at the task before us as too much to do. We at times are our worst inhibitors of success. If we only take courage, persist against the feeling of weakness or inability; we can do anything, if we only try. All it takes is to tell ourselves that we can do anything.\

As we move deeper into the month of February, already, there are things that we purposed to do at the beginning of the year that seem as though they will not happen. May I remind you that the year is still young. There are many more months to go. In fact, don’t measure your life by the number of years; instead, measure it one day at a time. Really, what is a year but a number of days? What is a month, but a number of days? And a week, but a number of days? It will be less stressful, if we live life one day at a time. I know we can handle that.

Let each day be a time to work on those things that can improve your health as well as your wealth. There is a correlation between health and wealth. Both are also interchangeable. As your health goes, so does your wealth and vice versa.

Begin to add to your knowledge by reading more, finding out more, attending classes and conferences and round table talks. Find someone whom in your estimation is successful and ask them questions about what they do. Begin to live the life you want to be. I call it “act as of”.

Act as if you are the person that you want to be. Act successful, wealthy, empowered, accomplished, and inspired. Stop being hard on yourself. You deserve the best that life has to offer. Go out and take it. It’s never too late to do what is right for you. So, do it today. Do it now.

Time to Think of Renewal

Since time is always of the essence, it is never too early to do first things first. As we near the end of 2017, we can begin to set our sight on the times ahead. The end of one year and the beginning of another as simply parts of our continued journey here on this earth. Since our beginning, we have not stopped and begun again. If anything, we change directions, continue on some courses, stopped to refresh and reboot, or increase our pace. We really do not end and begin again. This is so, because our life is a journey which will end at some point for good.

While we travel our journey, we can or we must consider our purpose. Why are we here? Where should we be? What is our service and to whom is our service? What do we have to give and by what mechanisms should we give it? These are some of the many questions we must ask to define and clarify our purpose. A focused purpose will provide a greater result than one that is ill-defined and sparse.

It has become clear, especially in recent time that economies around the globe are changing. What used to be a definite path for many families are no longer the norm. Industries that once required little knowledge have changed to those that demand specific skills and expertise. For example, coal for heating home is surely going the way of dinosaurs.  Cheaper and cleaner energy forms have pushed coal fuel to the back of the energy line. The promise of Donald Trump that he will put coal miners back to work is really untrue. So, with the emergence of wind, nuclear, and solar energy sources among others, to be employed in the energy sector required specific skills in science and technology. That is a far cry from digging for coal and the like.

New forms of entrepreneurship are springing up everywhere as a result of the demands of new economies. Many of the old brick and mortar stores are being replaced by tiny businesses, operating from homes or small spaces with the use of computer technology. Wealth creation can be achieved at a desk with a desktop or laptop computer and a few more gadgets. Payment systems are also changing, making the movement of funds easier and cheaper. It is with that in mind that I encourage many budding entrepreneurs and young people dreaming of finding their niche in life or want to make it BIG in E-Commerce to consider the following:

How to Breakthrough to a Life of Wealth Creation and Freedom

Why is Finland at the Top in Education?

The news was stunning in the West, in 2001, when it was discovered that Finland was ranked at the top after a standardized test was done to see how well students in developed countries were performing. With all of the available resources at hand to support student learning, Western students were preforming well below expectations and more so, below students in countries far less equipped and resourced. The question was: Why were students in Finland doing so well?

A close look at Finland’s approach to education reveals several reasons for success. Foremost among the reasons is that Finland teaches have high status, receive much professional support, and receive wages comparable to highly paid professionals.

In Finland, teachers teach about half the time Western teachers do; about four hours a day. Another two hours are given to professional development. Teachers are able to reflect on their instructional skills almost immediately, thereby allowing them to make corrections, sharpen approaches, or develop new tactics. The time allotted each day for evaluation and analysis of practice, result in a much improved confidence in the material taught in general and the calming environment in which teaching is done.

Parents, administrators, and students alike treat teachers with a similar respect they accord a medical practitioner or other highly regarded professional. In some instances, it could be said that Finns have a greater trust in their public school teachers than they do in other governmental institutions.

It must be noted that becoming a teacher in Finland is no small endeavour. Teachers are required to have a master’s degree and undergo a vigorous teacher training program that lasts for five years. Teachers in the secondary panel are expected to have a master’s degree in the subject area in which they intend to teach. In addition, teachers are expected to complete their master’s degree with a well-researched dissertation.

Another note-worthy point about Finland’s educational approach is that it does not have national standardized test and teachers and schools are not rewarded or punished based on student performance. No school in Finland is blamed for poor performance of students, neither are schools rewarded for high performance. Teachers are solely responsible for setting and evaluating student expectations. The government has no say in this area.

This next point is key to student success in Finland and should be clearly noted. Students in the early grades in Finland have a lot of time devoted to recess. In the West, we talk about the fact that students learn through play, but there is no follow through with that stated view. In fact, our schools tend to ensure that students have less time to play. The moment a child arrives at school in the West, the pressure is on to conform to the strict restraints that the system has in place. To do otherwise is not acceptable. So, for many students, school can be a restrictive environment,(allow me to be candid) much like a prison
